State of the League

The end of last month marked the first tournament of the 2017 season. The Orange County Super Championship took place at Santiago Canyon College. An idyllic hilly region near the unincorporated area of Orange County often affectionately called "Orange Hills". For those of you who have never been to the region, I would describe it as an area close enough to the fast paced modern lifestyle found in Orange County, while maintaining a quaint rural feeling. Truly a beautiful slice of the OC and an excellent location to start the season.

Our Orange County event can only be considered a great success, as we saw 1500 competitors battle over two days to establish their places in this years standings. Obviously it is still very early in the season to determine or predict who and what gyms will top the league. However, the big winners in the adult academy category at the Orange County event were:

Adults Academy

1. One Jiu Jitsu

2. Kings MMA

3. Johnny Morgan Jiu Jitsu

The team leaders and winners of said category at the OCSC were:

1. Checkmat

2. Champion's Union Jiu Jitsu

3. Carlson Gracie Team

Youth (Academy)

1. Carlson Gracie Garden Grove

2. Art of Jiu Jitsu

3. Pinnacle MMA

The team leaders for the youth and winners of said category at the OCSC were:

1. Checkmat

2. Gracie Barra

3. Carlson Gracie Team

These organizations are well on their way to becoming the league champions, and in some instances retaining their titles from the previous year. Other teams and gyms that want to ensure that the standings do not remain the same need to attend as many future events as possible. The local Orange County based academies had an inherent advantage at this event due to their close proximity and ease of attending. Make sure to take advantage for YOUR gym when our tournaments take place in your towns and counties.

There are still 5 tournaments in which teams and academies can earn points and completely flip the standings from their current status. The World Chamionships are also worth double points and can cause drastic alterations in the standings. To prevent your gyms from feeling the effects of the extra point rule for the World Chamionships, it is important to compete at as many events as possible with as many athletes as possible.

It is still early days, but we here at JJWorldLeague want everyone involved aware of where they currently stand, and how to improve or retain those positions.

Good luck at the coming tournament and we hope you enjoy the events as much as we do!
